I am very proud to introduce a new pride flag dedicated to celebrating our Butch community!
Butches have long been at the forefront of challenging traditional gender norms and societal expectations of gender. Being butch is more than just an aesthetic; it’s about confidence, authenticity, and breaking boundaries. We have carved out a space that defies binary gender norms while celebrating individuality.
I have been a professional graphic designer for over 20 years, and it’s no secret that I have a deep love and admiration for my butch community, so I felt it was time for me to merge these two passions. I thoughtfully and intentionally designed this flag with love to represent our butch community.
Each color and element carries a symbolic meaning:
Hunter Green Represents our deep roots, we have always been here and always will be. Butches are steadfast, always growing, and deeply connected to our natural existence.
Lavender Represents our connection to our LGBTQ+ history, recognizing that as we move forward we never leave the past behind. We embrace it, learn from it, and bring it forward as we evolve.
Teal Represents inclusivity and diversity across gender identities and sexualities within the butch spectrum.
Charcoal Represents our powerful existence and our strength. Let’s not forget charcoal gets very hot, just like butches ;)
Lapis Represents deep community connection & friendship, and reminds us that we are stronger together, not against each other.
Compass Represents our freedom to choose the course of our life, there’s no one right way to be Butch, you can determine the direction you want to go.
Upside Down Triangle Represents our empowerment & resistance and serves as another nod to our history and reclaiming our identity.
Our community is unique and expansive, which is what this flag is intended to represent. Our butch identity has long been misunderstood both inside and outside of the LGBTQ+ community. By creating a dedicated pride flag for butches, we aim to foster greater recognition and celebration of our community’s history and future. A representation that is free of gatekeeping and othering, that is welcoming to all.
This design was created to represent the courage it takes to live authentically as a butch individual and to serve as a beacon to those seeking authentic representation. A reminder that every facet of our community deserves recognition and representation. And that together, we can honor the past while looking boldly toward the future.
